For the second consecutive year, a Peacock play will be featured at Staged Reading, Scripts at Work (SAW) Main Series

Rosebud, Alberta – “It’s quite an honour to have my second play selected by Scripts at Work,
an Alberta playwright organization dedicated to nurturing existing, emerging, and ‘curious’ playwrights from
Central Alberta,” says Rachel Peacock, a former Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA) graduate. Staged
Reading - Scripts at Work (SAW) Main Series will take place Friday, April 30th at 7:30pm in room #1306,
at Red Deer College. Tickets available at the door: $10 Adults and $7 Students/Seniors.
“I wrote Curtains in response to watching the difficult changes elderly people go through as their health and
mental abilities decline. It is very hard for them and for their family and their caregivers. Yet in the midst
of conversations about wills and funerals I have layered some pure comedy.”
“As an example, the main character (Chris) makes proactive plans for his Great Aunt Mae’s death. But she
doesn’t die. Instead, Chris must buy back her clothes he donated to the Salvation Army, cancel her funeral
and admit to moving into her house because his pregnant girlfriend kicked him out. Aided by Mae’s spiritual
belief and support, Chris fights for his unborn baby in pursuit of the family regardless of how unconventional
that may look.”
Adds Peacock, “I wanted to explore family dynamics that drive people crazy, but mean the world to them.
We say things to our family members that we would never say to anyone else and often, we get away with
it - probably because we are genetically predisposed to love each other. I hope the audience will be touched
and relate personally to a story that connects with them at a family level.”
More good news for Peacock. Since her play Fishbowl was showcased at SAW in 2009, Central Alberta
Theatre has chosen to produce it as part of their One Act Festival in June. “I’m thrilled at seeing someone
else produce my play. Central Alberta Theatre has been amazingly supportive and generous with their resources.”

About Scripts at Work (SAW)
Scripts at Work is a Central Alberta playwriting series that is made up of workshops, readings, dramaturgy
sessions, rehearsals and other events that are meant to nurture existing, emerging, and "curious" playwrights
within central Alberta. From the submissions received each year, 4-6 plays are chosen based on the rankings
of our jury and then these selected writers get the opportunity to work with professional playwrights/dramaturges
and theatre directors. At the end of each season, SAW holds an evening of staged readings (Festival of New
Canadian Plays) for the community where the scripts are performed by both community and professional actors.
